The city of Alexandroupolis (57.812 citizens (2011)), part of the whole Municipality (72.750 citizens (2011)) is the administrative center of the Regional Unit of Evros, of Region of East Macedonia-Thrace and is of extremely strategic importance for Greece, due to its geographical position since it constitutes an interconnection gate between the Mediterranean and the Asian countries. Local authorities’ vision for the city is to transform Alexandroupolis into a sustainable city for its citizens with the use of new, efficient and user-friendly technologies and services in the areas of energy, transport and ICT. At the same time, Alexandroupolis has the ambition to become an internationally recognized hub of innovation, where the utilization of scientific knowledge for the development and the production of innovative technologies, products and services with a marked impact on sustainable economic growth will take place.
Alexandroupolis local authorities are committed in implementing a number of activities as part of the urban plans of the city that already exist (Urban Plan compiled for the Covenant of Mayors, Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and others) and integrate buildings planning, energy networks, ICT, transport/mobility planning and other additional issues. Alexandroupolis is an active member of Covenant of Mayors initiative and Greek Green Cities Network.
Into the framework of these actions the city of Alexandroupolis aims to:
- promote the use of RES
- promote energy savings measures
- promote the use of electrical vehicles
- incorporate ICT in energy efficiency monitoring systems
- create new jobs providing the employment market with well trained and specialized staff
Until today, Alexandroupolis has implemented and is planning to implement significant energy projects that have already enhanced the energy profile of the city. Therefore, Alexandroupolis can be considered as an ideal partner of Lighthouse project (follower city) in order to implement innovative measures and actions that are fully in line with the political ambitions and strategies
