The Gothenburg Smart City Challenge competition has been running during April and May 2020, with 18 innovative ideas, products and applications battling it out for a prestigious top spot!
The competition comprises a study module for third-year Industrial Engineering and Management students at Chalmers University of Technology and is a joint initiative launched by the university and the City of Gothenburg.
Since the start of the semester in January, 100 Chalmers students have worked in teams to develop and present ideas that aim to help the City of Gothenburg reach its goal of becoming a smart, sustainable city. To be valid entries, these ideas must be built on open data and digital technology and also offer a solution that doesn’t yet exist in Gothenburg.
Submitted ideas include everything from reducing food waste, improved mobility and air quality, water use management, a student accommodation platform, waste sorting and even connected urban farming. Voting closes 31 May 2020.
According to Robin Teigland, professor of digitalization and strategy at Chalmers University,
“We thought it would be a great opportunity for all parties to learn. Students get to work with data and digital solutions for the public sector and test their ideas in reality and the city gets an in-depth knowledge of how the younger generation thinks. Hopefully we also get new ideas that can be developed in the long term”.
The Challenge involves diverse stakeholders within Gothenburg cooperating to develop smart solutions that will both benefit local residents and can be exported to other European cities as part of the IRIS Smart Cities project and beyond.
